A $12 magnet, a $50 beeper, and a $220 scanner all claim to find what's behind your wall. Only one of them shows it to you — and most people need less than they think.

Magnetic finders don’t find studs at all — they find the steel screws holding your drywall to the studs. In practice, this differs from a stud finder vs wall scanner.

That sounds like a cheat, but it’s the most honest signal in the category. A rare-earth magnet snaps to a drywall screw or it doesn’t, with no batteries and no calibration.

Where there’s a line of screws, there’s a stud.

The trade-offs are clear. It tells you nothing about pipes or wires, and on thick walls the pull can be faint.

Electronic finders — the beeping kind, from about $15 to $80 — measure changes in the wall’s density through capacitance. On a single clean layer of half-inch drywall they work reasonably well. They start lying the moment the wall stops being ideal: plaster and lath reads as chaos, double-layer drywall mutes everything, texture and tile confuse the sensor, and every user learns the ritual of scanning the same spot three times and getting three answers. Many add an “AC detection” mode that senses live unshielded wires — useful, but it can’t see a wire that’s off at the breaker, inside conduit, or more than an inch or so deep, and it can’t see pipes at all.

Imaging scanners use radio-frequency sensing to build a picture of what’s inside the wall. Moreover, they identify studs, pipes, and wires as objects with positions up to four inches deep, displayed on your phone. Why the beeper fails exactly when it matters

The dangerous holes aren’t the ones near studs — they’re the ones near what you can’t see. Supply lines climbing a bathroom wall. A drain stack behind the kitchen. Romex stapled up the side of the stud you’re about to hit dead-center. A density-based finder registers all of these, when it registers them at all, as the same vague “something here” that a stud produces. It hands you confidence without information, and confidence without information is how a picture-hanging job turns into a plumber’s invoice.

One nicked half-inch supply line will cost you more than every tool in this guide combined. That’s the honest frame for the price question: you’re not paying for stud-finding, which a magnet does for $12. You’re paying to know where the expensive mistakes are.

Do magnetic stud finders actually work?

Yes — arguably more reliably than budget electronic ones, because they detect something unambiguous: the steel screws fastening drywall to studs. Sweep in an S-pattern until the magnet snaps to the wall, then find a second screw above or below to confirm the vertical line. They’re slow, and they tell you nothing about pipes or wires, but they never hallucinate a stud.


Can a stud finder detect wires and pipes?

Most can’t, despite the packaging. Electronic finders sense density changes and can’t identify what caused them; their AC mode detects only live, unshielded electrical wires — not wires switched off at the breaker, not anything in conduit, and never pipes. Actually seeing pipes and wires as located objects is what the imaging tier exists for.


Why does my stud finder give a different answer every pass?

Usually the wall, not the tool. Plaster and lath, double-layer drywall, texture, tile, and even high humidity change the density signal an electronic finder depends on, and recalibrating in a slightly different spot changes its baseline. If two passes disagree, believe neither — confirm with a magnet on the screw line before drilling.


How do I find a stud without any tool?

Three old tricks, in order of usefulness: measure 16 inches from a corner or a window edge and knock — a thud is a stud, a drum is a cavity. Check the baseboard for filled nail dimples, which land on studs. And remember most electrical boxes are nailed to the side of a stud, so there’s one within an inch or two of every outlet. Then confirm with something before you drill anything that matters.
