Untwist Tool Pro-Combo review: skip it — we ran 50 terminations to be sure

A $120 tool that promises to pay for itself in a few jobs. After 19 months and dozens of real terminations, ours never did.

PURCHASED WITH OUR OWN FUNDS

Untwist Tool Pro-Combo

What we tested

Nineteen months of field use, roughly 30 to 50 cable terminations across CAT5e and CAT6 runs. We bought it with our own money in December 2024 and gave it enough jobs to answer the fair question: does it get better with practice? It didn’t. Our results never became consistent.

The five seconds that weren’t

When the tool worked correctly, it saved maybe five to ten seconds per jack over untwisting pairs by hand. The problem is the word when. In real use we frequently had to reposition the wires, retry the tool, or finish the untwist by hand anyway — and every retry gave back the seconds it had saved. Across dozens of terminations, the honest average was little to no time saved, and on some jacks it made the job take longer.

What’s good

Fairness requires saying it: the concept is appealing, and when the pairs fed in cleanly, it did what the box promises. In nineteen months nothing on our unit broke or wore out. The failure here isn’t durability — it’s reliability.

What’s not

Inconsistency is the whole story. The tool did not reliably untwist pairs, positioning it correctly was frustrating, and stopping mid-jack to fix wires by hand defeats the entire purpose of a speed tool. It never completely failed — it was simply unreliable enough that we stopped reaching for it. A $120 tool you stop reaching for is a $120 loss.

About the marketing: the listing says it “pays for itself on the first few jobs.” Based on our use, that reads like marketing. At this price we expected a clear, repeatable reduction in termination time. We didn’t get one, and we would not buy it again.

Who should buy it

Almost nobody at this price. If you’re a high-volume installer terminating hundreds of jacks a month, the math could conceivably work for you — but test one unit against your own hands before committing, because the time savings may not survive contact with real cable.

Who shouldn’t

A homeowner running one or two cables — untwisting by hand takes seconds and costs nothing. Apprentices — learn to prepare and terminate cable properly by hand before leaning on any shortcut tool. Occasional technicians — the frustration tax outweighs the rare seconds saved. Put the money toward quality jacks, a good punch-down tool, and practice.

Owner-review context: the Amazon listing carries a 4.3 average across 114 ratings as of August 2026. Our experience across 30–50 terminations didn’t match that average — which is exactly why we publish our test basis, so you can weigh our evidence against theirs.
